Workout recap for the week

With a solid week of working out last week, Monday-Thursday I got a little lazy and took off until Tuesday. My plan was to go to the gym on Monday, but that didn't happen.

Tuesday
Swim: 1 x 1000 meters
Time: Slow

I went into my swim thinking let's try and do more than last week. Last week I had two swim days of 5 x 100 meters. My arms and body were tired after swimming 100 meters and I was determined to swim longer. My triathlon is soon and I needed to increase my endurance. Swimming is as much of a mental game for me as it is a physical game. I got past 100 meters and told myself just swim 200 and you can stop. I still felt good so I told myself, swim to 500 meters and than stop. After 500 meters the body still felt good, so I pushed myself to 750 and than to 1000.

I was really proud of myself and excited that I swam the 1000 meters non-stop. Yes I was slow, but yes I swam the entire distance. This means 300 meters will be EASY!

Wednesday
Run: 1.5 miles
Time: 14:21
Pace: 9:34/mile
Avg HR: 150
Max HR: 165

I really was planning on running longer than 1.5 miles. I went to intervals with full intentions on running 3-3.5 miles. Unfortunately I wasn't prepared for the thunder, lightning and rain storm that was about to take place. I don't mind running in the rain but I didn't want to die getting struck by lightning, so I cut my run short. The run felt good, but again I only ran for 1.5 miles, but it was something.

Thursday
Run: 3.55 miles
Time: 38:22
Pace: 10:57/mile
Avg HR: 138
Max HR: 160

I was determined to get a good run in since the rain stopped me the day before. It didn't exactly go as planned and I walked quite a bit. Today it was my left ankle and right foot that were bothering me. I really think this extra 12-14 pounds that my body is carrying is starting to have an impact on my feet. As always when needed I walked and I got the exercise I set out to get.

Friday
Swim: 1000 meters
Time: Didn't time. One of these days I'm going to bring my watch to the pool, hopefully next week.

I was hoping to get another good 1000 meters in like Tuesday, and I did and it felt just as good. My big body definitely likes swimming, especially if I keep it slow and steady. I am confident that I will be able to keep this up and with swimming being a no impact sport this will be something that I'll make sure I do at least once a week.

Saturday
Run: 3.16 miles (Military Red White and Blue 5K)
Time: 27:56
Pace: 8:50/mile
Avg HR: 166
Max HR: 182

With my last few runs being kind of cruddy, ie having to walk a lot, I didn't know what my expectations were going into the race besides just keep running. I felt good the entire run, and actually talked to a ton of people during the race. My heart rate was a little higher than I normally like to run with, but I think this was because of the rolling hills. Since I was able to talk and carry on a conversation on multiple occasions I wasn't concerned about my heart rate. I wear the heart rate monitor to monitor and keep track of my heart, duh, but all of the new studies say don't use HR to determine exertion, use the talking test. You should be able to say two sentences while doing your said exercise without being out of breath. I was talking much more than just two sentences, and I felt awesome. I made some new friends and was able to keep others on track to how much left we had to run and I think it was appreciated by at least a few. After the race I was excited to learn that I placed first in my age group. This was crazy because I normally run about 5 1/2 minutes faster in a 5K, so this was very slow for me (2nd slowest ever) but the competition wasn't there and Baby Murphy got a chance to win a race. According to Sean it was the baby that won not me, because the baby crossed the finish line first. They announced my win by saying "Tricia Murphy, running for two..." That made me smile!

I am really enjoying continuing to run these 5K's because it's keeping me accountable for running during the week, and I am having more fun than I realized just taking it slow. It's such a different experience finishing a race not out of breath and finishing with a true smile on my face.

I have a triathlon next weekend, which should be a ton of fun, I am really looking forward to it, plus I have 3 races planned for June: 5K, 8K and a triathlon.

Let's hope I keep smiling!
