Peas are a favorite of mine, which is funny since it is probably my Mom's least favorite food ever. The thought of peas makes her want to vomit. Regardless of what Kieran's Grammy thinks we want to introduce peas. We want to expand Kieran's palate and hopefully he won't be a picky eater like I was when I was little.
Peas were easy to make, not as easy as mashing a banana, but easy enough.
I bought frozen peas, because they were easier to work with and also I could grab them when I was ready to use them. The thing you have to be careful with, which I didn't realize before starting to research baby food, is to make sure that there isn't any salt added. I didn't even know they put salt in with some frozen foods. It took a few brands for me to find a bag that under ingredients it just said: Peas, but I found one.
I didn't measure quantity, but I poured about half the bag (a 16 oz bag) into a sauce pan and cooked with water just barely covering the peas. By doing so I was mostly steaming the peas. I didn't time it, but I probably had them on the stove for about 10-15 minutes. I taste tested a few times, and decided when they were a little soft that they were done.
I decided to use the Magic Bullet this time instead of the food processor. Easier to pull out and easier to clean. I scooped the peas out with a slatted spoon and left the remaining "pea water" in the sauce pan.
I began to pureeing with the Magic Bullet, but to help the peas puree into a finer puree I poured in a little bit of the pea water. By doing so I was able to get a nice thin puree.
After pureeing I tasted to make sure it was thin enough and that the skins were pureed. When I go to serve I can always thin out further with breast milk, but the tiny addition of water helped to get a texture that was perfect for scooping into my one ounce portions for freezing.
I love my little containers. I had some sweet potatoes left in the freezer that I had frozen in these containers, so I popped out the frozen sweet potato and put them in a zip lock bag so I could use the containers for my peas. As I start to make more food for Kieran I'll have to try and remember to remove the food from containers once they are frozen so I can have a variety of choices in the freezer to pull from.
I can't wait to see Kieran's reaction to peas and also, I wonder if this will make his poop green, my guess yes.
All I can say is YUCK! Peas taste as bad as they look!
ReplyDeleteHope you're enjoying making your baby food! I made all of Liam's food and I really enjoyed it. There's something gratifying about making your childs food... and knowing where everything in it came from! :) Hope Kieran enoys the peas. Not one of my favs, but you gotta try! Take care and give your 'lil peanut a hug from the Hein crew. :)
