First Food - SWEET POTATOES

Kieran has patiently, or not so patiently been waiting for a taste of something other than breast milk. Yes he's had rice cereal but seriously has anyone tried this stuff? It has no flavor. It is so bland. Every time I'm eating something Kieran is grabbing at my food, and I feel bad that I haven't been sharing, but I want to do this by the book. I know there are lots of new ways of introducing food, including Baby Lead Weaning, but this is not for me. I'm old fashion and want to stick with purees.

It is recommended to introduce one food at a time in case an allergy develops it is easier to determine what food is not working. I told Sean he could make the decision on what Kieran's first food was going to be. I gave him a few choices and he picked Sweet Potatoes. I think this is a great choice because who doesn't love sweet potatoes.

Making sweet potato baby food was easy!

1. Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees
2. Wash sweet potatoes and wrap in aluminum foil (keep skin on).

3. The website I was following said to cook for 30 minutes, I found that I had to cook for about 45 minutes. I could tell they were cooked when they were soft to the touch.

4. I ended up letting the potatoes cool about 45 minutes, this was because we had to feed and put Kieran to bed. This ended up being perfect because the potatoes were still warm but not too hot to touch. Cut lengthwise.

5. Scoop all of sweet potato out of skin and put in food processor.

6. Turn food processor on and "Ta da" pureed baby food!

7. I bought these one ounce containers on amazon that are perfect one serving portions. At $5.99 for an 8 pack and free shipping I decided to give them a try. So far they seemed to work great. We'll see how easy popping the food out is, it has a soft base to make popping the food out easier.

8. I guess I took a picture before I was done. Here are some of the potatoes ready to put in the freezer. I ended up pureeing 2 of the potatoes and I filled 7 one ounce containers. I could have filled the 8th one but of course it's gone missing before I've even used it. That's ok, I got to sample the potatoes and I'm not sure why I've been adding so much stuff to sweet potatoes in the past, they are delicious with nothing added.

I will be sure to do another post after Kieran gets a taste with lots of photos and most likely a video clip.

  1. Way to go Mamma! Kieran will thank you for the extra special care you put into his food. No perservatives or additives! Can't wait to see what he thinks of them once he gets to taste them. Keep us posted. Love you!
