Week 14

My baby boy is 14 weeks old and I can't remember what it was like to have a little baby in the house anymore. Ok most people will tell me "Tricia Kieran is still a little baby" but he has changed SO much it's hard for me to see him as a little baby anymore.

I forgot to write in my last post but as of Thanksgiving weekend Kieran is done with the nipple shield and breastfeeds perfectly fine with no assistance. In fact we need to practice giving him the bottle more often because we are now finding that he sometimes fights the bottle. The boob is so much easier for both of us and so much more relaxing as well. Sean does like to help and Kieran does have to go to daycare so he needs to be an expert on both methods of feeding.

As for a weight gain this week he went from 9 lb 8.6 to 9 lb 15 oz. He just doesn't stop growing!

I don't think I mentioned last week that Kieran got his second dose of Synagis. This is to hopefully prevent him getting RSV this winter. As a preemie he qualified for this shot and will receive a total of 5 shots (one each month through RSV season). I was hoping that this shot would be better (ie. Kieran wouldn't mind as much) since it was just one shot and not 4. Well it wasn't any better and he did the silent scream just the same as last time and both the nurse and I had to breath into his face.

Now that Kieran is breastfeeding so much better I can do it on the go and don't have to pack a bottle or worry about going home to feed.

On Tuesday I decided to take Kieran to the pool for the first time. Sean and I both can swim but not fast and we're hoping that by getting Kieran into the pool early and hopefully into swim lessons early he will get the advantage that so many of our friends who started swim team early have.

I had decided a few weeks ago that I wanted to start taking him to the pool and I just needed to get him a swim diaper, an obvious requirement to take him to a public pool. Of course all of the swim diapers at the store were way to big for him. I decided to look online and my sister Stacy actually found a Kieran size diaper at a store in Vermont and called to tell me the brand, iPlay. I looked on Amazon as I normally do, I love the free shipping and returns, and found a newborn size and bought one. The newborn size goes up to 10 lbs which he is at the cusp of but I thought it would fit better than the size small.

I got the swim diaper in the mail a few days later and was very excited to try it on Kieran. I'm glad it fit because he peed in it right away....that's my boy!

I wanted to take him to the pool ASAP, most importantly I wanted to take him before he outgrew the swim diaper.

It took a bit of time to get all of our things together once in the locker room. I didn't want to leave his car seat in the locker room just in case, so I had to juggle that and holding Kieran and our towels etc. We managed and it was nice that the pool was basically empty. I think there were two others in the pool, but they were swimming laps. Kieran and I started wadding into the pool, I was pleased to see that they had an area of the pool that slowly gets deeper, so you can slowly walk into the water.

I held Kieran close to my body and then also swished him back and forth. He didn't really know what to think. We lasted about 5 minutes before he started to get fussy. I didn't want to push it too much, so we'll try again maybe on Friday.

I think Kieran was more excited about getting warm after swimming than swimming itself.

Time to bundle up! This hat makes me smile and laugh everytime I see him wear it.

We received an early Christmas present from my mom, the iFlip camera. We have been having a lot of fun taking short videos of the little guy mostly during the morning when he is the most playful.

Kieran LOVES his play mat, he's really starting to grab at toys which makes it lots of fun to watch and play with him.

Kieran is really starting to get good at Tummy time and loves moving his legs.

This is the first and only time we've really seen him so interested in sucking on his fingers and hands. He's put them in his mouth before but never like this.
