I thought babies were supposed to get easier?

I'm exhausted, I think Kieran is going through another growth spurt because he's switched from eating ever 3 hours (this was very consistent) to eating every 1.5-2 hours. This means his naps aren't as long and he's extra grumpy and always hungry.

He's also gained quite a bit of weight already this week. Monday he was 9 lb 15 oz and Thursday he weighed in at 10 lb 4.4 oz. 5.4 oz in 3 days is a lot. They recommend a baby Kieran's age gain between 4-7 in a week.

Kieran now only poops twice a week so I was thinking maybe he was grumpy since he hadn't pooped since Sunday. Well he finally pooped yesterday, and it was probably the most foul smelling poop ever. Whomever said breastfed baby's poop doesn't smell hasn't smelt Kieran's poop. I do not look forward to solids when the poop gets worse in so many ways. Anyways, the pooping didn't seem to help.

Also Kieran has been having a very consistent morning nap of about 2 hours, the last few days he lasts maybe 30 minute....ugh, Mommy's tired!

Yesterday was the worse for the amount of feedings he wanted, but I was hopeful that if he cluster fed all day than he would be good over night, nope I was WRONG.

Yesterday Kieran ate at:
1:30 pm, 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm, 6:15 pm, 7:30 pm

Then we did bedtime routine and put him to bed...fingers crossed that he'd sleep all night. That didn't happen but he did last a little longer, okay not really that long just 3.5 hours.

Evening/night feeds were:
11:00 pm, 1:15 am, 3:30 am, 4:45 am, 6:45 am.

7 am starts our day so when I feed him close to 7 I turn the lights on, unswaddle and make him know the day is starting. He was very smiley although he looked tired as well. Lots of stretching but hopefully this will mean he'll nap better today and sleep better tonight.

Of course since it's Friday that means Sean is "on call" for Kieran duty so I do hope he does well otherwise Sean might sneak Kieran into the bonus room to sleep with him on the futon.

Now Kieran is trying to nap, but just can't seem to get settled. It's taking everything not to just grab him and lay on the futon and nap together.

Lets all pray that today is better and he gets back to his normal self of normal naps, and normal feedings so I don't go crazy.

  1. Have you thought or heard about baby wise? I started the "idea" with Kate around this age because she was doing the exact same things! It's basically a 3 hour cycle of eat, play, and then sleep. You feed him every 3 hours, play with him, and then have him sleep until it's time to eat again. Then you know if his cries are for hunger or if he is just over tired. You don't want to use food to get him to sleep and they say if you stick to this 3 hour schedule he might be sleeping through the night in a few weeks. Kate always woke up 1-2 times to eat until she was 11 months but she would give me at least 6-8 hours which is considered sleeping through the night. Email me if you are interested or have any questions! It saved me for sure!!!

  2. Thanks Kiera he is basically on the baby wise schedule. He just got diagnosed with reflux so I think this had a lot to do with his fussiness. He's been a lot better, got to update my blog!
